MASC 351 Course and Second Life Highlights
We designed and developed a virtual classroom environment using the Second Life platform (Davis, 2012). Our KATE virtual learning environment (VLE) includes smaller group learning spaces, as well as, a larger interactive virtual classroom. Preservice teachers (PSTs) enrolled in the [redesigned] MASC 351 course, design and deliver instruction in one of the many virtual learning spaces or in the larger classroom, as they address equity in algebra learning. PSTs lead algebra and problem solving lessons with diverse middle grade student avatars. The foundation for this work, are a set of Hypothetical Learning Trajectories (HLTs), an Algebra HLT and an Equity HLT, which were designed by KATE researchers (Kulm, 2012).
